Under supervision, takes direction, and performs as a team member, all operations necessary to ensure the confinement and extinguishment of fires or other hazardous conditions, and maintains a state of readiness to respond to emergency calls. This includes, but is not limited to, the following duties and responsibilities: Responds to various emergency calls including structural and environmental fires, traffic collisions, hazardous material spills, and medical aids. Connects and lays hose lines, selects and operates hose nozzles according to conditions and supervisors directions, directs hose water onto fire, or provides back up by feeding hose line; operates other fire extinguishing appliances. Performs search and rescue procedures, utilizing hand and power tools, hydraulic tools, portable saws, power generators, ropes, webbing, and similar equipment.
Performs ventilation or entry procedures by opening up walls and other structures with the use of hand or power tools; raises, lowers, and climbs ladders to access buildings or rescue persons; make forcible entry into, and enters burning buildings or other locations. Provides medical aid to injured persons according to scope of practice that is allowed by local Emergency Medical Services or departmental authority, operates any and all related emergency medical equipment that may be provided and is allowed within your scope of practice. Maintains district stations and grounds in a neat and clean condition. Assumes responsibility for assigned collateral duties. Performs salvage and overhaul procedures to protect property by using salvage covers, brooms, mops, shovel, and similar equipment. Participates in, and assists in the preparation of, drills, demonstrations, and courses in firefighting techniques, medical aid, heavy rescue, hazardous materials, equipment maintenance and related areas; studies local conditions and factors affecting fire operations; studies departmental policy and safety procedures; studies inspection regulations and prevention rules; maintains physical fitness and health.
When qualified serves as an apparatus operator in the Engineer's absence, or as assigned. When so assigned, the Firefighter drives and safely operates apparatus with due regard for the welfare of the public and department. Troubleshoots mechanical problems and make minor repairs.
When qualified, serves as a company officer in the absence of the Captain, or as assigned. Inspects business occupancies and performs follow up procedures to insure compliance to Fire Codes, National Electric Code, Uniform Building Codes, state, local and regional codes; participates in local school fire prevention programs by presenting or preparing presentations; performs station tours, and other public education activities to promote fire safety and public awareness; completes appropriate paperwork. Establishes and maintains an effective working relationship with employees, representatives of other agencies, and the public. Gives clear and concise verbal instructions. Understands and follows verbal and written instructions and orders. Thinks clearly and act decisively under stress.
Participates in training in Hazardous Materials and daily maintenance of equipment and materials and mitigation of hazardous materials incidents.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Certifications:
- Minimum 18 years of age at time of employment.
- Must be eligible to work in the United States.
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Must possess current EMT-1, (B)asic, or Paramedic licensure (National Registry acceptable).
- Paramedics must possess current EMT-P licensure, ACLS, PALS, ITLS or PHTLS and CPR- Healthcare Provider or equivalent.
- EMT-B must possess current CPR Healthcare Provider or equivalent.
- Valid California Class "C" license or equivalent with a clean DMV history.
- Possession of a valid Class "B" California Drivers license or a noncommercial firefighter restricted Class "B" license by completion of 24 month probationary period.
- Graduation from a Firefighter-1 Academy or equivalent recruit academy.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Employees hired into this classification after July 1, 1995 shall:
- Maintain Emergency Medical Technician B certification or EMT-Paramedic Licensure for the duration of employment.
- Obtain accreditation to work as a Paramedic in El Dorado County within three months of employment, and maintain such accreditation for the duration of employment.
- Maintain CPR- Healthcare Provider certification or equivalent for the duration of employment.
- Obtain and then maintain a valid California Commercial Class B or Firefighter Class B Driver License with Tank and Air Brake endorsements for the duration of employment.
- Satisfactorily complete all individual performance standards and Standard
- Company Evolution's required of suppression personnel for the duration of employment.
